Wicked Delivers
For every story there exists a prelude, in many cases unwritten, leaving it up to our imaginations to deduct, through endless possibilities how things came to be. Some accept the story as it is told and give no additional thought to the subject. Good conquers evil, happily ever after; it is a formula that is accepted as the universal truth of all fables.
Gregory Maguire, author of the novel Wicked, reminds us that there is revelation in the untold story, that things are never as they seem and that truth unveiled is what we want to believe. Winnie Holzman, playwright and author of the book and Stephen Schwartz, music and lyrics writer for the play shared in the spirit of Maguire. They adapted his masterpiece Wicked into a critically acclaimed award winning musical that can now be seen on stages worldwide.
Wicked did a previous run on the Toronto stage but for those of you who missed it, or who simply cannot get enough you can catch it at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY until July 13, 2008 as part of M&T Banks 2008–2009 Broadway Series.
About the venue, Alma Cuervo, who plays headmistress Madame Morrible, remarks, “For a theatre that large [Shea’s] is one of the best. The balcony is close to the stage, unlike some of the newer venues designed for rock concerts”. She continues, “They did a spectacular job on the backstage area and they restored the front so beautifully, it feels great to be there”.
The set is truly astounding. It is intricate, beautiful and magical, truly transporting the audience into the world of Oz. The set changes were seamless, like turning a page in a book, each elaborate design consistent with the story. The famed smoke and mirrors monstrosity of The Wizard’s head and booming voice that strike fear and awe to those honored to appear before him was larger than life. The special effects left nothing to the imagination; nothing was missed, even the rain falling during the song “Not That Girl” was believable, creating a real connection with the viewers.Page 1/...Page 2
